Candidate Statement:

Kim Sexton-Lewter is a dedicated wife, mom, educator and community organizer with 30 years of experience advocating for equity in education and public health in city, county and state government policy. Principled, pragmatic and fair, she will fight to pass legislation that improves the wellbeing of individuals and families, empowers working people and protects citizens from government overreach.

Kim is running for office because she believes that politics should be centered around people – not corporations and special interests. She sees how the policies passed in Raleigh impact the lives of her neighbors everyday at the Center for Community Transitions, where she works to strengthen families and support individuals dealing with the incarceration and/or deportation of their loved ones. She knows first hand the impact that leading with the values her faith taught her– kindness, empathy, compassion, and caring for others – can have on communities.  She’s seen the results with her clients first-hand.

Kim is a lifelong learner who truly believes that education can be the great equalizer. She is a former middle school teacher and served as a public health educator at UNC Greensboro for nearly 20 years. She and her husband Justin have been married for 28 years. They moved to North Carolina at the beginning of their marriage to pursue their graduate degrees. Kim has a Masters in Public Health, a Masters in Conflict Resolution and a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies. She and Justin also made sure each of their children understood the value of a good education – they all hold college degrees and are now pursuing their dreams. She believes that all children deserve the ability to thrive and reach their full potential the way her kids were able to, and will fight to fully and equitably fund North Carolina’s public education system.

Kim's service and commitment to the community are staples in her life.  She believes in civic engagement and community building.
